The Fresh Expat of Holland

Now this is a story all about how,
My life got flipped turned upside down,
And I’d like to take a minute, just sit or stand,
I’ll tell you how I became an expat in a place called Holl-and.

In South East London born and raised,
Learning game design was how I spent most of my days.
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool,
And all graduating with honours early from school.

When looking for a job that would suit me good,
Couldn’t find any in my neighbourhood.
I sent one little email and my life got weird,
They replied “We’ll move you out here for a job with us. You’ll live in Holl-and.”

I booked myself a flight and when it landed there,
The people spoke Dutch and there were canals everywhere.
If anything I could say that this country was weird,
But I thought “Nah, forget it, that’s Europeans everywhere!”

I’ve lived here for years, about ten plus eight,
And thought to myself “Oh wow, life’s now great.”
Look at it all, I know where I stand,
I love my life as the Brit in Holl-and.

(This post is the kind of thing that happens when I start binge-watching The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air on Netflix.)

Stuart

Stuart is an accident prone Englishman who has been living in the Netherlands since 2001. Even his move to the country was an unintentional accident, the result of replying to a cryptic job advertisement he found one day in a local British magazine. Since then he has learned to love the Dutch (so much so that he married one of them) and now calls the country home. He started the blog Invading Holland in 2006 as a place to share his strange stories of language misunderstandings, cultural confusions and his own accident prone nature.
