Quote Of The Week: English
“Ugh. I just can’t seem to speak right English today.”
“You seem to be doing fine to me.”
“You’re just say that. English is easy for you since it’s your first language.”
“Yeah but just because I’m English does not mean I’m good at speaking it.”
“But you should at least be better at speaking English than you can Dutch.”
“Not necessarily. English or Dutch. I’ll freely mess up both. I don’t limit my linguistic errors to just one language.”
English is my second language, Dutch is the third. So sometimes, I got confused about if I am using an English word, or I created one derived from a Dutch word, vice versa… And my language skill with my mother tongue is downgrading as well since I use it a lot less… I claim to speak 3 langauges, but not able to master any of them…So sad…
I know what you mean. I’m not to the stage where my English is getting that bad yet but I do have moments where I completely blank on an English word.
As someone whose brain is a jumble and mish-mash of varying vocabulary and grammar tenses in three different languages, I couldn’t agree more. *fist bump*
Yeah… It’s weird that you just wrote that whole thing in French :p
Getting older doesn’t help either. You tend to forget words that you have been using since you were a child. The Dragon keeper is very good at mashing words for me to decipher.
Also spelling them, thank goodness for spell check.
That gives me something to look forward to as I get older :p
I find that the longer I stay here the more linguistically challenged I become in English as well as Dutch. It’s not just about making mistakes…I just can’t remember my own language! So I sympathise fully :)
