Speculoos Addiction: Follow Up

Speculoos

A few days ago I confessed my uncontrollable addiction for Speculoos sandwich spread (or as it is known by its street name: Speculoos Paste). It was a big step for me to go public about my problem. The reactions I got were divided. Some of you shared stories about having the same addiction; others were disgusted by the thought of such a thing. I thought that between you I might find some measure of help and support in quitting and getting clean.

So how did you decide to help me? What did you think was the best approach, knowing full well that I would sell a kidney to get a single jar of the stuff? You told me about this…

Speculoos Crunchy

Speculoos Crunchy Jar

My girlfriend found it. I tried it last night. I ate it straight from the jar with a spoon. Now this has happened:

Speculoos Intervention

Stuart

Stuart is an accident prone Englishman who has been living in the Netherlands since 2001. Even his move to the country was an unintentional accident, the result of replying to a cryptic job advertisement he found one day in a local British magazine. Since then he has learned to love the Dutch (so much so that he married one of them) and now calls the country home. He started the blog Invading Holland in 2006 as a place to share his strange stories of language misunderstandings, cultural confusions and his own accident prone nature.

Omg I’ve been living here for 10 years and have never tried it. Maybe I should go with the ‘what I don’t know won’t hurt me’ idea, seeing as I’m trying to lose weight and all.

Hey, I’d like to add you to FB, I am a big fan of your blog and am a fan of it on FB. I’d love to have you on there as well :) Melissa can vouch for me that I’m not crazy. Well, not totally anyway!

I’ve only just tried the ‘normal’ one and I was extremely proud of myself that the jar lasted a good 3 weeks. I could have eaten it in 3 days, if I had to. This stuff is so addictive, I don’t dare to try the crunchy one. (And: have not said it yet, but it’s good to see you back blogging again!)

  3. Anneke says:

Stu! You nearly Od-ed on the regular stuff, now you’re taking the worse version!? INTERVENTION! *tackles Stu as soon as he reaches for jar*

  4. mub says:

You passed along your addiction to my husband and I! We better not try the crunchy stuff, we’ll go into bankruptcy!

  5. angela says:

I haven’t tried this yet! I’ve been told by several people it’s delicious!

  6. Lissa says:

Just reading about it is making me drool. Why oh why am I no longer in Belgium to experience this?!? I think a “visit” may be in order, just to try the sandwich spread…

  7. zed says:

Still too sweet for me. I’m a Marmite gal and the good thing about Marmite is that you cannot, unless you really, really adore salty stuff, eat it straight from the jar. Marmite is better for you than you thought.

As a reaction from a true dutch men.

Speculoos is addictive and I love it!

Actually liked the idea in your previous post about speculaas-speculoos-speculaas sandwich. Sounds and looks yummy :D

  9. Gez says:

See, all you have to do now is try the crunchy version in a specul**s sarnie. Or just really mess things up by doing that, then making THAT into a proper sandwich by sticking bread round it. Hell, the real Dutch make sandwiches out of onbijtkoek (Breakfast cake for the non-speakers) in bread.

Breigh – All I will say is if you try it you ‘will’ be addicted :p

You obvisilly have no idea how crazy I am. Where should I send the facebook details to?

San – You are a stronger person then I if you can make a jar last that long (Thanks. It’s good to be back)

Anneke – NOOO!!! It’s my jar! You can’t have it! It’s mine! It’s my… precious.

mub – I don’t know how I feel now knowing that I am dragging other people down with me.

angela – Would we lie to you? Join us.

Lissa – Be careful you don’t get caught crossing the boarder with it.

zed – I’ve never been able to eat Marmite.

Avalon – I’m thinking abour selling the recipe :p

Gez – I’m too scared to try that. Who knows what would happen.

  11. Avalon says:

    I sinned, I bought a new jar today :( :P It’s a addiction!

  12. Invader Stu says:

    Avalon – Of course :p

  13. Dragonlady says:

Stu are you making extra visits to the Gym? This all sounds soooo fatening. We must try it next time we come over. What is it made of?

  14. Invader Stu says:

I’ve already started going to our local gym and after new years I’ll be going a lot.

And I’m not sure what it is made of but I’m guessing magic and dreams.

  15. The girlfriend says:

@dragonlady: would you like us to bring some??? and coconutbread aswell, and….. :D
